In Kochi, the government has directed a compensation of Rs 25,000 to be paid to Sojish of Nettoor following an order from the state human rights commission. The compensation will be collected from the salary of the former SI of Panangad in three equal instalments, as per the additional chief secretary of the home department. This decision was made after Justice JB Kosi, the chairman of the commission, ordered the compensation. Sojish, a member of a scheduled caste, was allegedly beaten by former Panangad SI Vipin AB. The complaint stated that Sojish was taken into custody by a police team led by the former SI without proper authorization after being admitted to a hospital. This led to Sojish filing a complaint with the commission, resulting in the order for a case to be filed against the SI and compensation to be awarded. While the SI faced departmental action with a reprimand, no compensation was initially provided. The government noted that the SI had the chance to defend himself before the commission but failed to do so, leading to the decision to compensate Sojish.
